Predictability effects and parafoveal processing of compound words in natural Chinese reading

چکیده
We report a boundary paradigm eye movement experiment to investigate whether the predictability of second character two-character compound word affects how it is processed prior direct fixation during reading. The was positioned immediately target word, which itself either predictable or unpredictable. preview pseudocharacter (nonsense preview) an identity preview. obtained clear effects in all conditions, but more importantly, skipping probability for and whole from pretarget greater when than not preceding context. Interactive later measures on (gaze duration go-past time) were also obtained. These results demonstrate that information sentential context regarding likely upcoming characters are used concurrently constrain nature lexical processing natural Chinese

متن کاملEarly parafoveal processing in reading Chinese sentences.
The possibility that during Chinese reading information is extracted at the beginning of the current fixation was examined in this study. Twenty-four participants read for comprehension while their eye movements were being recorded. A pretarget-target two-character word pair was embedded in each sentence and target word visibility was manipulated in two time intervals (initial 140 ms or after 1...
متن کاملParafoveal processing across different lexical constituents in Chinese reading.
We report a boundary paradigm eye movement experiment to investigate whether the linguistic category of a two-character Chinese string affects how the second character of that string is processed in the parafovea during reading. We obtained clear preview effects in all conditions but, more importantly, found parafoveal-on-foveal effects whereby a nonsense preview of the second character influen...
متن کاملWords in Context: The Effects of Length, Frequency, and Predictability on Brain Responses During Natural Reading
Word length, frequency, and predictability count among the most influential variables during reading. Their effects are well-documented in eye movement studies, but pertinent evidence from neuroimaging primarily stem from single-word presentations. We investigated the effects of these variables during reading of whole sentences with simultaneous eye-tracking and functional magnetic resonance im...
متن کاملNeural correlates of processing sentences and compound words in Chinese
Sentence reading involves multiple linguistic operations including processing of lexical and compositional semantics, and determining structural and grammatical relationships among words. Previous studies on Indo-European languages have associated left anterior temporal lobe (aTL) and left interior frontal gyrus (IFG) with reading sentences compared to reading unstructured word lists. To examin...
